Artist Statement: For my piece, I chose a Monet. It is a beautiful painting of his back yard, in these entrancing darks and lights. The main color he used for his piece is blue and I just fell in love with the piece when I saw it. I picked it because it reminded me of calming relaxing days at home. With finals so near and the stress of finals I thought it would be an appropriate twist. I actually had a really hard time choosing between my three paintings I picked from the show. I picked the vase because I've always loved Greek culture and it really reminded me of the movie Hercules which is one of my favorite Disney movies. I wanted to do something different with this project as well and I have never done a sculpture or a pot. I really started liking the idea of pottery when we did that one day of the wheel during class. My other piece I chose was a painting of what looked like a majestic queen and king from England. I've always had a fascination with royalty as well so the painting really spiked my interest. In the end I chose the cool hues of the Monet. I had never done a still scene like this or an outdoor scene like this and I really liked how it turned out.
For my destruction project I made cupcakes. I then decorated them in frosting and made a small picture with the frosting. To destroy this art I gave the cupcakes to my family to eat, thus destroying the art. I came up with the idea because I love baking and I thought it would be cool to make art with it. I also liked the idea because then I could eat it when I was done. I took pictures of how I made the cupcakes and my process as I made them.
In this unit my teacher assigned us a topic; collaboration. I am collaborating with my group (Chelsea, Conner, Delante/brian/steve, Tiffany, Niki, and Emily) to make a chalk mural on one of the brick walls in the court yard. We decided that we are going to draw "thought" bubbles, like the kind they have in comic books to show that the character is talking, and inside the bubbles there will be common words or phrases that someone today might say. I think I have an authoritive role in the group, but we actually work really well together as a team and we help each other improve the ideas. Our finished project will have the outline of a person and then thought bubbles covering the wall in all different colors.
For our video assignment our table did a stop motion video http://youtu.be/AJvF5wdtMPI is the link to the video. I used a rock and cut out paper. I got the idea from the editorial video on the app and just changed it and made it my own. On friday we had to pick from the words Wish, Silence, trouble, and puppet and illustrate the word. I chose Wish because it reminded me of Disney and all the wishes in Disney movies. Disney movies also make me happy. They remind me of childhood and rainy days. As you can see I incorporated Jiminy Cricket, because he is from Pinocchio and in Pinocchio his wish is granted. I think Jiminy Cricket is associated with wishful thinking. I also incorporated the Genie from Aladdin, the north star, and a wish bone. This is my limitation piece. I named it Identity. My limitation was that I could only use finger prints, so NO BRUSHES. I printed out a thumb print and traced the design on a large piece of board paper. I wasn't quite sure what I wanted my color scheme to be, but I really liked how it turned out. I feel like it describes me in a way because the colors are just like emotion. They vary and can some times be dark and somber, but also be light and happy. I used acrylic paint for the medium. I think another limitation was standing the onion smell of the yellow paint. It made me want to throw up. I had to figure out a way to incorporate the onion yellow into the majority of the piece. I actually changed the middle three times, originally the first 7 swirls were plain red and the middle was neon orange and yellow. I think the darker brown brings out the center. My favorite group limitations project was the newspaper towers. We had to make a tower, using only tape and newspaper. The group with the highest tower at the end won. I liked it because i thought we worked really well as a team and our design was really cool. We had a problem because our tower was leaning and not stable enough, so we had to secure cross beams with tape and make it thicker as the tower got taller.
For my artist steal I did a cross between the fairy godmother from Cinderella and the male version of Elsa from the 2013 movie, Frozen. I liked the outcome and thought I did a good job with the shading, I would have liked to make him look more realistic. To draw the figure I printed out the male version of Elsa's body and put it against a window to trace it. I used color pencil as my medium. Forr my final project I wanted to touch on the grip of social media. My piece represents how much of an impact not only social media, but technology as well has impacted the world. I used a balloon as my object that made the paper mache round. The paper mache took me three days to complete and I used glue and newspaper. On the last day I cut circles of newspaper instead of strips to give it a more round feeling. I had to replace the balloon twice because the heavy paper mache made the balloon shrink. I had to let it dry over the weekend, but come monday it was ready to paint on. I used acrylic paint. The different social media apps represent the different countries. So, Snapchat is Antartica, Vine is Australia and so forth. I put the finishing touches on it a few days ago, and I made the "Countries" pop out more and gave them more realistic colors. I added brown and yellow and a lighter shade of green. The different colors helped me make the social apps more recognizable. I really liked my idea for the project, I think social media is a huge part of today's society and deffinetly impacts te majority of todays youth. I think social media is controlling and sometimes in bad ways. Social media is how we learn news, pass along information, connect with friends, and plan our lives. The world would literally be turned upside down if we didnt have socail media. Which is why I put "Antartica" on the top because it's really sussposed to be on the bottom. My question to you is: do you think it would be a bad thing if we didn't have social media? Mr. Sands gave us the task of putting an object in a space and then video taping it to see how people reacted to it. My idea for the task was to put one of my old broken cell phone's at my brothers bus stop. When the kids got off the bus, they would see the phone and I would be in my car videoing it. I think it will be interesting to see what kids walk right by it and what kids pick it up or do something with it or maybe turn it into a parent. The kids are ages 5-11, so many of them don't have a phone and probably want one. The tricky thing is the parents. I have to get there before the parents do, so they won't see me put the phone on the ground. I want it to look set up so I might put a book under the phone and then prop the phone up against a cup or another sturdy object. It will make the object stand out more in case the kids don't see it against the ground.
This is my observational piece. I was stuck on what to do and wanted to be interested in what I was drawing. Suddenly, it hit me. What do I have for dinner twice a week? Chick-fil-A. I could eat it for a week straight. So I played with a few ideas and finally came up with this one. It represents that Chick-fil-A is the best fast food you can buy. I guess you can say I have a passion for food. When the piece was finished, it came out intense and I really liked the final product. I used fine-tip sharpie and red acrylic paint for my medium. I have never used sharpie or the cardboard paper before and it was an interesting learning experience using something new.
